John Taylor Wood Papers, 1858-1915

John Taylor Wood (1830-1904) was a United Statesand Confederate naval officer. He was the grandson of Zachary Taylor and nephew ofJefferson Davis. The collection includes correspondence and diaries (inpart microfilm). Included are descriptive letters,1858-1860, from John Taylor Wood to his wife, Lola (MacKubin) Wood, written from KeyWest, Fla., France, Italy, Greece, and other places, and while at sea; diary,1860-1861, of family life and public events while a professor at the Naval Academyin Annapolis, Md., and on his Maryland farm, including events leading to hisresignation and concerning the Union's preparations for war; letters to his wifewhile in the Confederate Navy on Virginia rivers, discussing daily life, battles,and wanton destruction by Union forces; diary, April-July 1865, while he accompaniedJefferson Davis from Richmond and then escaped to Cuba and Canada; brief narrativeby General John Cabell Breckinridge, who was with Wood on the escape to Cuba (typedcopy); scattered letters received, 1865-1904, at Halifax, Nova Scotia; and a familyhistory and scrapbook (microfilm).
